i know what the original meaning/origin of the swastika is. based on the “punk” nature of some of the artists i’m talking about, i think it’s more likely they are using it for shock value rather than trying to reclaim it. but i guess i’ll find out when i ask them again, more directly. besides, i’m not sure how i feel about the reclamation of the symbol. i am in the west, and that symbol still has a strong meaning relating to nazism here. there are still many neo nazis using that symbol across the US (and i’m sure elsewhere), except now they are using it against non-whites, muslims, and homosexuals. so, no, it’s really not “but whatever”. i’m really not okay with it.
